TikTok crosses 2 billion download mark

NEW DELHI: The popular video-sharing app TikTok has been downloaded 2 billion times. As reported by Sensor Tower, the social video app from ByteDance has been downloaded 2 billion times globally from App Store and Google Play Store.

The latest milestone comes just five months after TikTok surpassed 1.5 billion downloads. In Q1 2020, it generated the most downloads for any app ever in a quarter, accumulating more than 315 million installs across the App Store and Google Play Store.

The report adds that the latest surge in the number of downloads can be attributed to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown. The lockdown has drawn more consumers to their mobile devices.

The report further adds that India has been the biggest driver of TikTok installs, generating 611 million lifetime downloads to date, or 30.3% of the total. China is the No. 2 country for installs, accumulating 196.6 million to date, or 9.7% of all downloads.

On the other hand, Google Play has accounted for the vast majority of TikTok downloads to date, racking up more than 1.5 billion installs. The App Store, meanwhile, has generated 495.2 million downloads.

Recently, TikTok added new features in the form of Donation Stickers which allows users to donate for charitable causes to help people who are in need due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. With the new feature, TikTok is planning to collect around $10 million in donations until May 27, globally.

The new Donation Stickers can be used by TikTok users in their videos and live streams to encourage followers to donate. The Donation Sticker redirects users to an in-app donation page where users can enter their banking details and amount they want to donate and make the payment.
