Mourinho explains why Martial took Man Utd’s penalty instead of Lukaku

Speaking after the game at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho confirmed he let the players on the pitch decide the take between themselves as regular penalty taker Juan Mata had been substituted off.

Mourinho told Sky Sports after the game: “The penalty-taker today(yesterday) was Juan Mata, but he was out so I let the players take the decision. It is nice for Anthony Martial, fine for me, no problem.”

Martial, who had come on as a second-half-substitute had won the penalty himself forcing a handball from Everton’s Michael Keane and duly dispatched United’s fourth of the game and his third of the season.
Antonio Valencia had given Man Utd the lead inside the fourth minute with a breathtaking first time volley with the outside of his right boot, before two goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Lukaku put the game beyond Ronald Koeman’s side late in the second period.

Mourinho’s men now go level top of the Premier League alongside local rivals Manchester City on 13 points and identical records.
