Tuition fees hike: NANS threatens protest

• Ministry blames ex-President Buhari for increase

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prevail on the management of federal universities across the country to jettison their plan to increase school fees and levies paid by students.

But the Federal Ministry of Education said the new school fees regime for unity colleges was reviewed by former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

NANS gave the warning in a statement by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr. Giwa Temitope, at the weekend.

The national students’ body said the fee increment by the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, which was announced last Friday; the planned fee hike by other federal universities across the country and federal government colleges, showed what it called insensitivity to the plight of most Nigerians who are going through difficult times.

The statement reads: “It is most ridiculous that the government will be introducing fee increment without thinking of rescuing the over 133 million Nigerians out of multi-dimensional poverty they are in.”

“To us, an increment in school fees will complicate the poverty conditions of most parents and students, and it will increase the number of out-of-school children in the country.

“Before now, some students could not afford the fees and various other levies. Because of that, many of them dropped out of school. What would now happen to students, who are sponsoring themselves and their parents, who have more than one child in school?

“As an association, we believe that the Nigerian government has what it takes to massively fund education and make it accessible, if there is a political will.

“In fact, the student loan that was introduced by the Federal Government is nothing but a sham and a bait to lure Nigerian people into accepting increment in fees payment.

“Beyond the fact that the terms of the loan are ridiculous, history has taught us that not every applicant will be considered.

“And even if all were to be considered, that does not justify fee increment in an economy like ours with a high unemployment index.”

Some documents obtained yesterday from the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja showed that the new school fees regime was approved by the immediate past Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, under ex-President Buhari.

A source in the ministry, who spoke in confidence, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the fees were reviewed across board and not only for JSS 1 pupils.

The source said the uniform was added because of adulterated uniforms procured by parents for their children.

He said this was done to ensure uniformity in dressing, adding that tuition fees in government unity colleges were free while the pupils would pay for other things, such as textbooks, uniform and feeding, for boarding students.

“The news trending now about a hike in school fees was reviewed by the last administration.

“If you check the date on the circular, it was before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office and we released it in May to sensitise parents.

“So, the increase is insignificant, as projected in the media. Truth be told: we don’t charge school fees. Which school will you put your child in and feed him or her for three months with N30,000?

“The overheads in the school system is very poor. They just released money for April two weeks ago. So, it is the money that students pay that is used to augment some things in the school,” the source said.

In 2020, the Federal Government charged N15,000 as boarding fee for new students, bringing the total fee to N50,500.

The government also reviewed the boarding fee to N30,000 in May, thereby bringing the total fee to N100,000.

For returning students, the Federal Government charged N48,500 as total fee in 2020 as against N47,000 in 2023 for boarding students.

UNILAG confirms hike in fees, to take effect September

UNILAG confirms hike in fees, to take effect September

The University of Lagos has announced an adjustment in the obligatory fees for both returning and new students of the institution.

This is contained in a statement by the university management issued to newsmen by the Communication unit on Friday night in Lagos.

According to the statement, the upward review in the fees is with effect from September 1.

“After careful deliberations with its stakeholders comprising of students, parents/guardians, staff unions and alumni among others, the university of Lagos management has reviewed the obligatory fees (mandatory charges for an academic session/year) of new and returning undergraduate students of the institution.

“The adjustment in these fees which will take effect from first semester 2023/2024 academic session, is in view of the prevailing economic realities and the need for the university to be able to meet its obligation to its students, staff and municipal service providers among others.

“It is also pertinent to note that the university has not increased its obligatory fees in recent years.

“Management therefore seeks the kind understanding and support of students and other stakeholders with assurance of its commitment toward ensuring that students get the best learning experience,” it stated.

A breakdown of the fees shows that the mandatory charges for one academic session for new undergraduate students include N126, 325, for courses without laboratory/studio.

The statement also indicated N176,325 as mandatory charges for one academic session for courses with laboratory and studio.

A further breakdown of the approved mandatory charges for one academic year or session for returning students showed that they would pay N100,750 for courses without laboratory and studio.

The approved mandatory charges for courses with laboratory and studio according to the statement is N140,250.

The statement further added that approved charges for all Medical students of the institution was N190,250. It noted that utility charges of N20,000 was to be paid by all undergraduate students, while a total of N30,000 was to be paid by all final year students.

According to the statement, charges for field trips, where such is a mandatory requirement of the course of study, will be determined as the need arises.

Parents beg FG, seek review of increase in school fees

More concerned parents of Unity College students in the country have called on the Federal Government to revisit the sudden increase in fees for their children, in a bid to make education accessible to all.

The Federal Government, through a circular issued to principals of unity schools across the country and sighted by NAN, increased the fees for new students from N45,000 to N100,000.

Mrs Mitchelle Uzor, a small business owner, told NAN that there was no way children of low-income earners could afford such bills, considering the current economic reality in the country.

According to her, the unity schools remain the last hope for the masses in acquiring standard education, without necessarily breaking the banks.

She said news on the increase was a blow to her, as she had been saving and preparing for her son, who just graduated from primary school and was ready to gain admission in one of the colleges in Lagos.

“I really don’t know what to do now. I am in a state of confusion because I can not afford that kind of money.

“Times are already hard ordinarily. We can barely feed properly and yet we are faced with this kind of news.

“A situation whereby there is no more hope for access to good public schools where we can still find quality education for our children is unacceptable.
“As Nigerians the only thing that we can gain as proud citizens of this country should be quality education but as we are going, all that seems to fizzle out with all these developments.

“It is not what we expected at this time,” she said.

Mrs Funmilayo Olubiyo, a civil servant, decried the development and called for a review of the fees.

According to her, the current economic crunch is already too much a burden to bear.

FG Increases Unity Colleges’ Fees From ₦45,000 To ₦100,000

According to the circular, new students are expected to part with ₦100,000 instead of the previous 45,000.
A file photo of secondary school students writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
The Federal Government has increased school fees for Federal Government Colleges (FGCs), otherwise known as Federal Unity Colleges, from ₦45,000 to ₦100,000.

This was contained in a directive from the Office of the Director of Senior Secondary Education Department of the Federal Ministry of Education, reference number ADF/120/DSSE/I, dated 25th May 2023 and addressed to all principals of Federal Unity Colleges.

According to the circular entitled “Approved fees/ charges for Federal Unity Colleges (1st Term) for new students,” signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, new students are expected to part with ₦100,000 instead of the previous ₦45,000.

The latest fees/charge increment will affect virtually all aspects and activities of the school, including tuition and boarding fees, uniforms, textbooks, deposit, exercise books, prospectus, caution fees, ID cards, stationery, clubs and societies, sports, extra lesson, insurance, among others.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives had on July 11, urged the Federal Government to reverse the increment of school fees in all federal government-owned secondary schools.

The resolution followed a motion moved by Saidu Abdullahi (APC, Niger) and Kama Nkemkanma (LP, Ebonyi).

Nkemkanma had while moving the motion said the increment was causing untold hardship for students.

JAMB withdraws result of Anambra student who secured a N3million scholarship after faking her result

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) has said it would withdraw the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination(UTME) result of Miss Ejikeme Joy Mmesoma for parading a fake score.

A statement released by the board's Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Fabian Benjamin, on Sunday July 2, says Mmesoma scored 249 in the examination as against the 362 she is parading. The organisation said it would prosecute Miss Ejikeme for tampering with its result. It added that Miss Ejikeme was offered a N3 million scholarship by founder of Innoson motors, Innocent Chukwuma for scoring 362 in the 2023 UTME.

 The statement reads;
“The attention of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) has been drawn to several publications in both print and online media celebrating certain candidates for being high scorers in the 2023 UTME.
The Board is constrained to set the records straight and wishes to state unequivocally that many of the results which many of these candidates are parading are fake. In many instances, some of these candidates had actually obtained far lower scores than they are claiming and had used some funny software packages to manipulate their results to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.
The most pathetic of them all is the case of Miss Ejikeme Joy Mmesoma, who claimed to have scored 362 in the 2023 UTME and was awarded a N3m scholarship by Chief (Dr.) Innocent Chukwuma.
She was even set to be honoured by the Anambra State Government when one of its top officials put a call through to JAMB to confirm her claim only for the Board to reveal that Miss Ejikeme Joy Mmesoma had actually scored 249 and not 362 she claimed. She had manipulated her UTME result to deceive the public to fraudulently obtain scholarship and other recognition.
The Board would like to state that the likes of Mmesoma are still out there deceiving those who are always in a hurry to bestow honours on candidates without confirming from the Board.
A similar case was that of one Atung Gerald in Kaduna, who claimed to have scored 380. His ethnic group had taken the issue up requesting that he should be given special recognition only for the Board to disappoint them with the incontestable fact that Atung never obtained the 2023 UTME application documents not to talk of sitting the examination.
The Board would, therefore, want to advise the public to always cross check these claims by candidates with the Board before rushing to honour them with undeserving awards as certain software have been created to fake their version of their results and put same out in the public space for fun and this is what the sponsors of these candidates are using to defraud good-spirited Nigerians such as Dr. Innocent, the founder of Innoson Motors, who sincerely desires to celebrate academic excellence by investing in the education of a young Nigerian.
We commended the likes of Dr. Innocent Chukwuma and wish to encourage other Nigerians, who desire to invest in the future of genuine youngsters, never to be discouraged but to always ensure that they get the authentic results from the Board as done by the Anambra State Ministry of Education, otherwise they will be celebrating criminality as this is just another new fraudulent method in town. However, these candidates only succeed in manipulating what they are holding as the authentic results are with the Board and would be transmitted to their schools of choice at the appropriate time.
It is to be noted that Miss Mmesoma had sent a message to the Board’s platform to request her UTME result after which she manually inflated her scores and pasted the same on the 2022 UTME result sheet. Unknown to her, the Board had changed the design of the 2023 UTME result sheet. Her original result remains 249 as nothing can change that. With this her ignoble act, Miss Mmesoma would be prosecuted and her original result withdrawn. This is not all as the Board would, in due course, investigate all candidates laying claims to higher scores than they actually obtained. Once discovered, such candidates’ original results would be withdrawn forthwith and they would be handed over to relevant security agencies for prosecution.”

Autopsy report reveals how ex-LASU student activist was killed

According to the autopsy report, the 28-year-old died from "massive haemoperitoneum, combined sharp and blunt force, trauma to the abdomen."

The post-mortem report of a former student activist of the Lagos State University, Yusuf Alowonle, has revealed that he died from “massive haemoperitoneum, combined sharp and blunt force, trauma to the abdomen.”

The autopsy was carried out at the Department of Pathology and Forensic of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) by Mgbeoma A.I, a doctor, on September 10.

The report counters the claim that the deceased, a 2019 graduate of Educational Management, was shot dead in a robbery incident near the school gate, last month.

He was buried in Atan cemetery, Yaba, on September 10 as sympathisers decked in black mourned.

Autopsy Report

A senior forensic pathologist at LASUTH told PREMIUM TIMES that the death certificate seen by this newspaper

suggests that the 28-year-old did not die from a gun wound.

According to the pathologist, who preferred not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the press on the matter, the “massive haemoperitoneum” means massive bleeding into the abdominal cavity and it resulted from a combined sharp and blunt force trauma to the abdomen.

The sharp object could be a broken bottle, knife while the blunt force could be as a result of the deceased being hit by a hammer, he said.

“On face value, this is certain. If it was a gunshot, it would have been reflected in that death certificate.

“On face value, there is nothing to suggest a gunshot. Just looking at this, I can tell you that this person was not
shot.”

The pathologist noted that the death could be intentional or accidental and urged the police to investigate the matter.

Following his death, Mr Alowonle’s elder sister, Ganiyat Bakare, while addressing a press conference at the International Press Centre (IPC) in Lagos, had demanded an autopsy be carried out on his remains to ascertain the cause of his death.

There had been rumours that the deceased was targeted due to his student activism. However, it is unconfirmed as the police are yet to share the outcome of their findings.

Gunmen abduct lecturer from staff quarters of Taraba State University

Head of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management (Faculty of Agriculture) in Taraba state university, Umar Buba has been abducted by gunmen from the staff quarters of the institution in Jalingo, Taraba state capital.

Professor Vincent Ado-Tenebe who is the Vice-Chancellor of the university, said the lecturer was kidnapped in the early hours of Sunday May 30.

Tenebe disclosed that the assailants fired sporadic gunshots to displace the security officials attached to the staff quarters during the attack.

He said;

“This is a very sad story, and it has not happened in the past two to three years ago when we had our Director of Information kidnapped after which we put so many strategies on the ground to prevent ugly situations in the future.

“I am so surprised that this happened again, and I know that we have police personnel, that of NSCDC, our security outfit, and vigilante group members hired by the institution to keep the place safe and despite all of these, the former Dean of Students Affair has been kidnapped."

The Vice Chancellor also said that the management of the institution would engage concerned authorities to grant licences for staff to have their guns for their protection and that of the students, as they can't fight gunmen with bare hands.

Tenebe added;

“If you have a licensed gun and you are trained, then you will be able to defend your family and the immediate community of students.

“We have grown past this, and I don’t think there is going to be any other solution than for us to apply for licencing of arms so that these bandits will know that we are equal to the task to defend the defenceless.”

Buba's wife, Samira who recalled how he was abducted, said it occurred shortly after they switched off their generator at about 12:15am. Samira disclosed they heard a noise which they believed was a windstorm.

She said;

“When I met one of them, he asked me where my husband was, and I understood immediately that they were kidnappers. After I understood their plan, I offered myself to be taken as their target instead of my husband and I pleaded that I have a little baby whom I needed to go with and they rejected my offer, insisting that my husband was the target.

“When they gained access … they struggled to go with him (the victim) because he resisted. We have never heard that kind of gunshot in our entire lives."

Samira revealed that when security operatives arrived at the scene and went after the kidnappers through the bush paths, they found nothing but charms, alcoholic drinks, and some clothes abandoned by the gunme

She disclosed that the abductors of her husband have not made any contact with the family to know what their demands were.

Taraba police spokesperson, David Misal confirmed the incident and said the police were on the trail of the kidnappers to rescue the lecturer. He also called on the residents to provide the police with useful information that would aid the rescue of the abducted lecturer.

New salary structure for teachers’ll create crisis – Wike

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, said on Monday that the new structure for teachers announced by the Federal Government would create crisis for the country’s educational system.

Wike stated this during a courtesy visit on him by representatives of the Board of the College of Medical Sciences, Rivers State University, at the Government House, Port Harcourt.

Wike in a statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim, was quoted as saying that while it was good to give teachers a new salary scale, it was also important not to politicise such a sensitive issue.

The governor pointed out that it was “good to give teachers special attention because of their strategic role in the society but such policy should be properly implemented.”

He said, “The clamour for a new revenue formula by states has not received any attention by the Federal Government despite the obvious need for the review; they are rather imposing a new financial burden on the states without consulting them.”

Wike said his administration will provide basic infrastructure that will make the College of Medical Sciences of the state university one of the best in the country.

Earlier, the Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Rivers State University, Justice Iche Ndu, thanked the governor for his support to the institution, saying the college had qualified staff members.

Lawan faults FG as Senate tackles govt, ASUU logjam

Senator Ahmad Lawan
The President of the Senate , Ahmad Lawan, has berated the Federal Government for signing an unrealistic agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities .

He said , “When we negotiate , we must negotiate in such a manner that the final product will be implementable.

“This is to say that we have to accommodate each other with government doing what it is supposed to do and ASUU , being the body of our lecturers , stands to protect its members .”

Lawan said these on Monday when ASUU presented its alternative payroll system , the University Transparency and Accountability Solution , to the Senate .

He also pleaded with the ASUU not to be too rigid in its demands in order to move the country forward .

He said , “I am sure that we need to review some of the items on the agreements .

“We cannot have an agreement signed in 2009 and still think this is the only way we can deal with it.

“We should be able to have a look at the agreements signed and see at this time whether or not some of the issues are really practicable at all .”

The President of ASUU , Prof . Biodun Ogunyemi , who addressed journalists after a three - hour closed -door session with the leadership of the Senate , said the visit was a follow up to the earlier one held between ASUU and the Senate in October 2019 to find a way out of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System crisis .

The university teachers had told the Senate leadership at the October meeting that ASUU would design an alternative to the IPPIS , which would accommodate the peculiarity of the university system .

Ogunyemi said the UTAS was a home -grown system that would end the eight - month industrial action by ASUU if embraced by the Federal Government .

He said , “We had a positive meeting which was cordial and we are going to continue from there . We will still meet again to continue from where we stopped .

Nigerian students to be banned from 4 year courses in the U.S

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) proposed fixed time limits could restrict some international students including those from Nigeria, from admission of more than two years.

If approved, international students, exchange visitors and foreign information media representatives will find it difficult obtaining visas for a four-year course in the US.

Under DHS’s new proposal, students from Afghanistan, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo (DRC) Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Kenya, and Kosovo would be banned from getting student visas longer than two years.

Others are Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Moldova, Mongolia, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, North Korea, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Rwanda, Samoa, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Togo, Tonga, Turmenistan, Tuvalu Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Yemen and Zambia.

Though valid status document provides legal grounds for students to continue their study in the US whether or not their student visas have expired, the DHS said its decision to institute fixed time periods for certain visitors is to “encourage program compliance, reduce fraud and enhance national security.”

The statement read in part;

“A key goal of shifting aliens in F status from D/S to an admission for a fixed time period is to provide pre-defined time periods for immigration officers to evaluate whether a nonimmigrant has maintained his or her status.

“If an immigration officer finds that an alien violated his or her status prior to or during the course of an EOS adjudication and denies the EOS request, the alien generally would begin accruing unlawful presence the day after issuance of the denial.”

The DHS added that the proposed rule seeks to reduce instances in which F, J, and I nonimmigrants, mostly students and exchange visitors “unlawfully remain in the United States after their program or practical training, ends.”

WAEC timetable is not determined by Nigeria - PTF Cordinator, Sani Aliyu

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Sani Aliyu has disclosed that the the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) timetable is not determined by Nigeria.

Aliyu in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday July 1, noted that the Federal Government will not want a serious spill-over in the nation’s academic calendar that will affect graduating students.

He also averred that there is need to find a way to safely get these students to do their exams and exit, to avoid such spill-overs.

Aliyu said;
“We have a large number of students that are in their exit year. They need to move on. We have exams that are not specific only to Nigeria but in West Africa, WAEC for instance.

“We need to find a way to safely get these students to do their exams and exit, otherwise we will have a serious spill-over when it comes to education.

“COVID will go away eventually. It may take a year or longer, but what we don’t want is to have such a significant impact on our educational programme where children are unable to move at home where there is no mobility."

Schools may reopen after lifting interstate travel ban – Education minister

The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, has hinted that schools may reopen in the country after the ban on interstate movement has been lifted.

The minister stated this during a briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja on Monday.

While restating that the government has not published any date for school reopening, he said the ministry will not want to lead Nigerians into danger.

Nwajiuba said, “We want to open when it is safe to do so. We have heard about neighbouring countries that opened and shut. We have heard about cases spiking with children getting into school. Of all the things I will like to do, I will not like to experiment with your children.

“We want a situation where once we are sure it is safe, we can then take them into school.

“I have just finished a meeting with the representatives of WAEC and NABTEB and I understand how that worries our parents at the moment and how anxious our children are to know what next.

“As soon as those in charge of the blockade lift it because there is no way we can open our schools if teachers can’t come. So, we are looking at somewhere after the interstate lockdown is lifted. Because we will need that kind of openness for the children to move.”

The Federal Government had in March shut all schools in the country as part of measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

FG adds lecturers to IPPIS without consent –ASUU

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities have alleged that the Federal government has added some of its members to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, through their Bank Verification Number without their consent.

ASUU National President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, in an interview with our correspondent, described the Federal Government’s action as an illegal act, adding that newly recruited staff were threatened with termination of appointment while the older members were told that their pension could not be guaranteed.

He said, “The strike is still on, we are not accepting the IPPIS, and our rejection still subsists. It is not suitable for the university system. We are working on an alternative which we will unveil soon. We have told the government that we are ready to discuss with them but they need time to sort themselves.”

Ogunyemi also said despite the presidential directive stating that their salaries should be paid, many of their members were still not paid.

“Before the IPPIS, the issues we were tracking have all remained the same so this strike will continue until when the government is sincere to come to the negotiation table with an open mind,” the ASUU President said.

Ogunyemi also condemned the reduction in the education budget due to the coronavirus pandemic, stating that an emergency should be declared on the sector.

“It is a disaster because no rational person can justify the reduction of the education budget. It is the most unreasonable thing any government can do. It is embarrassing at a time we are addressing a global emergency.

“Due to the pandemic, the government has taken steps to tackle health emergency so there is the need to also assess the situation of education. The government of the day in 2017, said the time was right to declare a state of emergency on education and this declaration is now more imperative in the face of COVID-19 especially in the higher education system,” he said.

University student sentenced to death by hanging for killing 8-year-old girl

You cannot take someone’s precious life and expect to live yours with impunity, the laws of the land will surely deal with you no matter how long it takes.
University student sentenced to death by hanging for killing 8-year-old girl
That’s what the ruling of a high court in Port Harcourt, Nigeria’s Rivers State appears to have underscored as it sentenced a second-year student of Physics department at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Ifeanyi Dike, and one Ugochukwu Nwamiro to death by hanging for killing an eight-year-old girl, Victory Chikamso Nmezuwuba.

The two convicts were sentenced to death by hanging without an option of fine, according to Gistreel.com.

Dike, who was aged 23 years when the incident happened in 2017, was apprehended by a local vigilante group in Eliozu axis of Port Harcourt with a sack containing Chikamso’s body following a tip-off. The local security outfit later handed Dike over to the police for further investigations and prosecution.

He (Dike) reportedly removed the victim’s eyes, vagina, finger and tongue, after defiling and murdering her with the assistance of his cousin, Ugochukwu.

Few days after he was handed over to the police, Dike escaped from the premises of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), with the aid of police personnel on duty, Sgt Johnbosco Okoronze, who failed to handcuff the suspect after he had finished writing his statement.

Dike’s escape triggered severe criticisms and condemnation compelling the then Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed to describe it as unfortunate and an embarrassment to the police force.

FG okays JAMB’s preparations for 2018 UTME

The Federal Government has expressed satisfaction with the preparation and facilities being put in place for the conduct of the forthcoming Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Malam Adamu Adamu, the Minister of Education, spoke briefly with newsmen in Abuja, after inspecting some of the Computer Based Centres ahead of the 2018 UTME.

He said he was happy with what was on the ground by way of facilities in some of the examination centres.

The registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is’haq Oloyede, said the board would continue to initiate reforms that would add value to the conduct of the matriculation examination.

The UTME is a computer-based standardised examination for prospective candidates into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The Board had announced the closure of registration for 2018 UTME on midnight of Sunday, 11th February, 2018 after two months of registration window.

Professor Oloyede warned that from next year, the board would introduce penalty for late registration, saying that the board was compelled to extend the closing date from 6th February to 11th February, 2018 to accommodate more Nigerians.

He said JAMB as a responsive organisation took the decision, albeit with great hesitation, to accommodate candidates who failed to register between the two months window period that ended at midnight of Tuesday, 6th February, 2018.

“The failure of these candidates to register is unfortunate, and the board hastens to add that this culture of impunity will not be tolerated henceforth.

“Indeed, penalty will be imposed for late registration from next session. Registration for Direct Entry candidates however continues.”
